Exciting new issue of Navigate: The magazine

In this issue, we explore the conundrum of being asked to deliver "more for less" in the face of contracting resources

January 2010

It seems only a moment since we ushered in the new millennium and yet here we are embarking into the second decade of the new century already.

Whatever it might bring, it is a decade which looks set to the very different to the last. To borrow a biblical analogy, the years of plenty are over. The lean years have arrived. With them, come new challenges for our public services and the people who lead them – not least for leaders in education and children’s services which account for the largest single area of local authority spending. For many it will be a new experience. Most headteachers currently in post, for example, will only have practiced leadership in the context of rising resources.

In this issue, we explore the conundrum of being asked to deliver “more for less”, in the face of contracting resources. Our main feature charts the challenge that lies ahead and opportunities that might unexpectedly arise for leaders able to take on the mantle of social entrepreneur. We profile one such leader, Sir Paul Edwards, chief executive of the School Partnership Trust to get his take on the way ahead.

Our regular columnist, Sir Tim Brighouse, offers insights into resource management in a downturn with his customary focus on issues that matter. And we have our usual round up of latest research, with stories for leaders with money on their minds.

As always, we love hearing from you about any of the content of Navigate magazine and your ideas for future issues.

Happy New Year!
